Let’s dive into the story behind Oakey's Sweetery and discover how our passion for baking began!
Baking has always been a cherished part of my life, starting when I was younger with simple box mixes and a heart-shaped pan that belonged to my grandma. I remember joyfully experimenting with vibrant colors, turning each baking session into a fun-filled activity. However, as I grew older, my baking skills didn’t quite evolve as I had hoped. Instead of mastering the art of light, fluffy desserts, I found myself creating dense cupcakes that felt more like a weightlifting challenge than a delightful treat. Despite the challenges, my passion for baking remained intact, driving me to continue trying new recipes and techniques in the hopes of finally achieving the perfect cupcake.
After graduating high school, I made the decision to chase my passion for baking. Enrolling at Kendall College in Chicago, I majored in Baking and Pastry Arts, and it turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Surrounded by incredible chefs and supportive peers, I absorbed valuable knowledge and mastered new techniques that significantly enhanced my skills. As I progressed through the program, my confidence in baking grew, and my family became the fortunate recipients of my creations. They enjoyed a delightful array of desserts and freshly baked breads that I proudly brought home, making every effort worthwhile.
Over the years, baking was more of a passion than a career for me. I worked as a cook and in various jobs, with baking only a side pursuit. After becoming a parent and juggling multiple responsibilities, the dream of baking lingered in my mind. Ultimately, I decided to take a leap of faith to fully pursue my passion. The journey demanded extensive research, and I've spent countless hours delving into the complexities of baking, often questioning my sanity. Yet, the hard work has undeniably paid off. This month, we proudly celebrate the first anniversary of Oakey's Sweetery. It fills me with immense pride and gratitude, especially towards those who believed in my vision—most notably, my husband, who encouraged me to leave my job and chase my dream. This milestone represents not just a business, but a testament to following one’s passion.
Some interesting facts about the owner of Oakey's Sweetery,
1.) The name Oakey's is the beginning of my daughter name and mine.
2.) I don't do cakes often because I overthink and stress about decorating on a big scale.
3.) I am baker that has carpal tunnel, something no baker wants to have.
Now, I leave you with a burning question. If baking is science, and I am a baker, does that make me a scientist as well?
You can email an answer to info@oakeyssweetery.com and if you don't think I'm a scientist, my 6 year old does.
